September 14th, 2009 Why a Feminine Name?
Like any Cross Dresser, I have given myself a feminine name. It works well for me and I am happy with it. Frankly, I like it better than my masculine name, but, then, I had no choice about that one. I have seen a great many fem names among CDers and some are pretty ordinary like mine and some are a bit off the mainstream and would not likely be used in public. Now, we generally have some good reasons for choosing the name we have. Mine comes from a friend from long ago who was very feminine but was also able to do just about anything the guys did and gained my respect because of that. But that’s not my point here.
There are a great many CDers who are out in the world and who need a fem name to match their fem presentations. That makes abundant good sense. But there are also a great many who never interact with anyone and who will never be called by any name at all since nobody will ever talk with them. Still, these ladies have fem names of their own choosing. I wonder what is the perceived value of these names. For my part, I was Cathy for a great many years before I allowed anyone into my world and before I needed a name to respond to. So, why bother with a name? Nobody would ever call me late for dinner.
I guess in my case, that name gave me a sense of completeness at a time in my life when I felt very fragmented and lacked a very good sense of self. I could look in the mirror and say: “There is Cathy.” That was much better than saying “Oh, there’s that odd looking guy in the dress.” My name matched my desired appearance and feeling. As I look back on the entire history of my name, I realize how important a name is. It is, to me, a short-hand way of saying a volume or two about who I am.
